About Montana State University - Northern Agricultural Research Center
Montana State University (MSU) Northern Agricultural Research Center (NARC) has 3,000 acres at the main facility and an additional 3,960 acres of grazing land located in the nearby Bear Paw Mountains. The research center has recently completed $3.8 million of new construction and renovation, including a new $2.1 million office/laboratory complex. In the spring of 2014, two center pivot irrigation systems were installed for research and production. The livestock facilities include a finishing/development dry lot and individual animal electronic identification (EID) system. The research center is typical of the environments where the majority of the cattle production occurs in Montana. Current NARC livestock research objectives include identifying genetic components associated with reproductive efficiency, utilizing nontraditional crops in backgrounding weaned calves, development of supplementation strategies to augment winter adaptive behaviors of range cows, and defining the repeatability of residual feed intake measurements using lower quality roughages and high concentrate diets. The NARC cow herd consists of approximately 300 Angus/Angus Simmental cross cattle. A modern research... scale greenhouse was funded and designed with construction to be completed in the near future. These facilities support the scientists to conduct both crop and livestock research at NARC which is distinctly unique to MSU. The current research center when fully staffed consists of three faculty, two operation managers, research scientists, 12 permanent support personnel. MSU-NARC is one of the seven research centers that forms the Research Centers Department. Faculty members at NARC conduct independent as well as collaborative basic and applied research projects with faculty at other Research Centers, main campus in Bozeman and other Universities. A local advisory board made up of area producers and industry representatives from the five surrounding counties, provides guidance on NARC research priorities.
