Research Animal Scientist/Agricultural Engineer GS-0487/0890-12/13
The incumbent serves as Research Animal Scientist/Agricultural Engineer in the Livestock Behavior Research Unit, Midwest Area, West Lafayette, Indiana. The Unit’s research program is mission oriented and directed toward solving high priority national problems for the dairy cattle, poultry, and swine industries and providing research results for USDA’s Action Agencies. The incumbent interacts in a multidisciplinary team of ethologists, neuroscientists, agricultural engineers, geneticists, nutritionists, and other physiologists within ARS, Universities, and the private sector. The major duties are developing measures of dairy cattle, poultry, and/or swine welfare that are science-based and informative under industry conditions and practices, identifying modifications in management systems, housing and/or equipment that improve/optimize overall animal welfare, and developing new or improving upon existing precision livestock farming technologies and/or best practices to improve animal welfare under commercial livestock production conditions.
