The Department of Animal Science seeks candidates for a tenure-track position aimed at developing an internationally recognized program in computational biology or systems biology related to dairy cattle management. The successful candidate will capitalize on current and emerging data-driven technologies, artificial intelligence, and high throughput genotyping and phenotyping tools to advance our understanding of dairy cattle biology, genetics, and/or dairy herd management for improving animal productivity, well-being, and sustainability. The position effort is research (50%) and teaching (50%) on a 9-month academic year basis. Teaching opportunities include an introductory level course in data management and analytics for students in agriculture and an upper-level undergraduate and graduate course in data analytics for dairy management, applied dairy genetics, or quantitative decision making. Course curricula will be aligned with the candidate’s subject matter expertise and/or curricular needs.
Upon approval by the provost and the board of trustees, the incumbent will be appointed to the prestigious Robert and Anne Everett Professorship for an initial term of three years at the assistant professor rank or five years at the associate professor rank, with the possibility of renewal.
The new faculty member will join a collaborative, interdisciplinary community on the main campus in Ithaca, New York. Opportunities exist for the candidate to interact with interdisciplinary centers and programs such as the Cornell Institute for Digital Agriculture, the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, the Cornell Dairy Center of Excellence, Cornell Tech, the Center for Vertebrate Genomics, and the Center for Comparative and Population Genomics.
Applications will be collected through Academic Jobs Online https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/21935 including 1) a cover letter briefly summarizing background and qualifications; 2) a statement of research interests (3-page maximum); 3) a teaching statement outlining experiences, philosophy, and interests (2-page maximum); 4) a statement of diversity, equity, and inclusion to show how, through research, teaching and/or service, the candidate can contribute to diversity, equity and inclusion in support of Cornell’s mission of “any person… any study;” 5) a detailed curriculum vitae, and 6) three letters of reference. Initial screening of applications will begin on August 15, 2022, and continue until the position is filled. Inquiries may be directed to Donna L. Wakeman at dlb8@cornell.edu or via phone at 1.607.255.2862.
A Ph.D. is required in animal science, genetics, or an appropriate discipline with demonstrated capability, success, and (or) potential in developing competitive research and teaching programs in computational biology or systems biology and data science in agriculture commensurate with the career stage. Postdoctoral research experience is preferred. Candidates with a strong interest and ability to develop decision-making tools while integrating big data, digital technology, and information science in dairy management are highly desirable.
