Duties and Responsibilities
To provide leadership, applied research, and education to assist existing and potential livestock producers of cattle, swine, small ruminants, and poultry. Emphasis will be on beef cattle, range, and pasture production and management. Responsibilities also include swine production and management, small ruminants (sheep, goats), poultry, and companion animals.
Develop multi-disciplinary, collaborative partnerships with faculty, government/community agencies, livestock associations, and stakeholder groups.
Network with other agents, specialists, and researchers to develop and conduct applied research and Extension outreach programs and projects, transfer research-based information and technology to stakeholders, and foster and enhance the livestock industries, including small livestock operations.
Develop Extension education programming that uses a variety of teaching methods and tools such as technology, media resources, distance-teaching methodologies, field days, and workshops to extend information and educational opportunities to stakeholders.
Deliver educational content and support by collaborating with the Oahu 4-H Agent to support the 4-H Youth programming addressing livestock, the equestrian program and companion animals.
Provide leadership to the State Farm Fair and State 4-H Livestock Council. Advise and be responsible for the 4-H / Youth Livestock projects, clubs, and local fair board within Oahu County, individually and in collaboration with other 4-H / Youth development faculty.
Support and provide Livestock Quality Assurance training to adult and youth audiences.
Seek, obtain, and manage external funding sources to support programming efforts, including grants and contracts, and practice cost recovery.
Conduct scholarly and Extension activities on the county, state, and national levels. Participate in county, department, college, and university service/governance.
Work with stakeholders at meetings that may occur after normal working hours and/or weekends at off-site locations.
Junior Extension Agent Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing, with major work in animal science or a related field.
Ability to apply Extension teaching methods, exercise independent judgment, and work well with others. Livestock evaluation knowledge and experience.
Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Driver’s License (Class 3), comparable driver’s license, or other means of transportation that meets the position’s needs.
Assistant Extension Agent Minimum Qualifications
A Master’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing, with major work in animal science or a related field, or, in addition to the Bachelor’s degree, 30 credit hours of post-baccalaureate academic work in a field appropriate to the position.
At least three years of successful experience in Cooperative Extension work or equivalent in a closely related field.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and assume responsibility for developing an Extension program.
Ability to work harmoniously with other agents in an integrated Extension system and with related agencies.
Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Driver’s License (Class 3), comparable driver’s license, or other means of transportation that meets the position’s needs.
Desirable Qualifications
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional and modern educational methods and tools.
Skills and ability to work effectively with adults, youth audiences, and volunteers.
Effective verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to working with diverse stakeholders and historically underserved or under resourced populations.
Experience with writing grants and obtaining additional sources of programmatic support.
Ability to use electronic technology (e.g., computer-word processing, database management, desktop publishing, web meetings, social networking platforms).
