The Department of Agriculture is located in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture and seeks to provide a dynamic, intellectual community primarily for the purpose of fostering academic learning and professional growth for its students. A focus on effective teaching, research, and service provides opportunities to:
develop critical thinking skills needed to compete in the diverse industry of agriculture;
develop effective communication skills; and
collaborate effectively within educational, cultural, economic, and professional environments in order to disseminate new and existing knowledge to agriculture’s stakeholders.
The department chair is a 12-month position and will be expected to:
provide strong leadership for a diverse department that includes creating a collegial environment supportive of faculty and staff and meeting departmental, college, and university goals with the ability to solve problems and conflicts in a fair manner;
advocate for departmental needs to administration as well as interpret administrative policies to faculty and students;
build partnerships with industry representatives and pursue funding opportunities through the university development office;
support and advance the department’s commitment to strong external partnerships by positively representing the department with community, state, regional, and national agencies/organizations; and
foster and support faculty members to achieve and maintain qualities most valued by the academic community: teaching excellence, significant scholarly and creative activities, and a commitment to university and community service.
The successful candidate will:
have sufficient experience to warrant a tenured appointment in one of the disciplines within the Department of Agriculture with a strong record of research and other scholarly achievements;
utilize a flexible and adaptive management style to positively facilitate and advance the Department of Agriculture’s strong reputation with the ability to manage people and resources; and
understand the unique needs of, and support all enterprises and resources in, the department including: Walter C. Todd Agricultural Research Center, SFA Gardens, Plantery, Agricultural Engineering Technology Laboratory, and the Soil, Plant and Water Analysis Laboratory.
Terminal degree in the field of the academic department or academic school, allowing the individual to teach within the department, is required.
Sufficient experience to warrant a tenured appointment in one of the disciplines within the department or school is required. Strong record of research and other scholarly achievements is required.
