SUMMARY:
This position is a twelve month full time appointment, serving as the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Department Head for College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR). In addition, the candidate will teach animal science courses within the college. This position will include operations and maintaining responsibility for major functional unit(s) within the CASNR at both Commerce and satellite campuses. Provides leadership for and is responsible for developing and sustaining a productive and collaborative atmosphere, mentoring faculty, developing an effective shared governance system, working effectively with the college dean and senior administration, building excellence in curriculum and coursework scheduling in collaboration with the faculty.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinating development of semester course schedules, including faculty workload, curriculum changes and timely submission to the Dean.
Assisting in program development, evaluation, supervision, and review; including identification of need for full and part-time faculty positions.
Assisting in the preparation and review of materials for the university catalog and other publications.
Development and implementation of evaluation tools beyond student evaluations. These may include 1.) in-class observations, 2.) peer observations, 3.) course assessments, and 4.) other methods as developed.
Providing supervision at TAMUC/CASNR Satellite campuses.
Assisting with and serving as an administrative reviewer for the CASNR Institutional Effectiveness (assessment). Oversees the assessment processes used for regional accreditation.
Promoting Agricultural programs in recruitment and retention as well as public relations.
Representing the College at university-wide activities, including regularly scheduled meetings of University Executive Council, Deans Council and Academic Council in the absence of the Dean.
Works collaboratively with faculty to build a positive culture and effective structures, policies and communication channels.
Assesses college performance and determines critical requirements for program practices and documentation.
Promotes, maintains and mentors the professional development and ongoing success of faculty within the academic college. Encourages and supports attendance at professional conferences, grant writing, academic and research publications, professional consulting, mentoring, and community engagement. Mentors faculty to success in achieving tenure.
Performs annual evaluations of faculty and staff. Develops annual performance plans outlining what each faculty or staff member will accomplish in the coming year. Combines results of individual plans to produce an annual performance plan for the academic unit as a whole.
Monitors graduation rates, retention, etc. and ensures compliance with any relevant Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board requirements, particularly, where appropriate, state-mandated core curriculum learning goals. Collaborates with faculty to mentor new graduate students and ensure that any graduate assistants employed by the college, including those supported by extramural funds, receive appropriate training and mentoring to enable them to perform their job assignments professionally.
Keeps faculty informed of institutional issues in a timely and transparent fashion and manages student issues; the graduation process; employment of adjunct faculty and GAs; college and program marketing, including the college website; student internships; alumni records; fund-raising initiatives; ordering of equipment and/or supplies; facility renovations; and the completion of various required reports.
Teach two courses in Animal Sciences each long semester.
This job description shall include, but is not necessarily limited to, the above duties. May temporarily perform other duties assigned to maintain operations and services. Marginal Functions will vary with the specific assignment and depend on the particular unit or function for which the person is responsible. Consideration will be given on a case-by-case basis and reassignment of marginal duties will be made when appropriate.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education and Experience: Doctoral degree and experience in Agriculture from an accredited institution.
Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Minimum of six (6) years of higher education academic experience. Earned Tenure during their career.
Ability to: Ability to teach Animal Science related courses. Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students, as well as people from culturally diverse backgrounds. Ability to work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends as needed. Ability to travel.
Administrative experience in higher education and/or industry, and been a faculty member/department head for 10 or more years. Demonstrated experience in program building and development, with accreditation, THECB and Texas A&M University System policies and university rules and procedures. Exhibited experience in program development, mentoring faculty, working effectively with the college dean and senior administration, building excellence in curriculum and coursework scheduling in collaboration with the faculty.
Demonstrated a high level of connection and collaboration with FFA Ag Science teachers and County Extension Directors. Leadership experience at the department head level. Willingness to work with and direct SACSCOC implementation for CASNR. Experience with and ability to implement Institutional Effectiveness directives and meet deadlines for the CASNR.
SUPERVISION OF PERSONNEL:
Department faculty/staff as needed and/or in the absence of the Dean serve as the college leader.
