Assistant/Associate Clinical Professor of Canine Behavioral Welfare
The Department of Animal Science at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Clinical Professor of Canine Behavioral Welfare. This is a non-tenure track faculty position on a 48-week academic year appointment with 100% Extension responsibilities on a fixed-term, multi-year (3 year) contract with the opportunity and expectation for continued renewal.
The successful applicant will develop a robust education, outreach, and applied research program focused on canine behavior and welfare for professional dog breeders. As a member of the Penn State Extension Animal Systems Unit, the individual will develop public education programming that focuses on good canine welfare practices. Initial focus will be on Pennsylvania with potential expansion into nearby regions. The successful candidate's responsibilities will include designing, developing, and delivering educational programs informed by a needs assessment that targets professional canine breeders. Outputs will include educational workshops, individual consultations, and online/print materials for diverse audiences with impact documented through improved welfare practices and pursuit of enhanced welfare certification. The individual in this position will be supported by an advisory group composed of individuals with knowledge of current canine welfare issues and collaborate with established professionals in multi-state canine welfare certification programs. The successful candidate will also work collaboratively with other animal welfare faculty in the college and seek extramural funding to support future efforts in applied research and education outreach.
Education and Experience:
Applicants must have a MS, DVM, and/or Ph.D. in Animal Science, Animal Welfare/Behavior, or related discipline with a strong background in canine behavioral welfare. Successful candidates must understand professional canine breeding facilities, animal behavior, and approved animal welfare practices. All degree requirements must be completed by the appointment date. Candidate must exhibit effective communication, creative leadership, and the ability to work cooperatively and engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, canine breeders, and industry leaders.
