Job Description
Responsible for planning, implementing, and conducting research in commercial, backyard, or small flock poultry management, broiler management, breeder management, layer management, hatchery management, waste management, or bird health. The incumbent will work with the poultry industry, small or alternative producers, backyard flock owners, and government agencies. In addition, departmental, college, and university committee service will be expected.
Texas ranks 5th in poultry meat and egg production nationally. On a cash receipts basis, poultry and eggs are the state’s second-largest agricultural commodity. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Department of Poultry Science at Texas A&M University serves a broad client base from the commercial poultry industry to backyard chicken hobbyists. Information regarding flock and bird health is the most frequent request for our Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service poultry specialists. A faculty member proficient in general poultry management and health issues, emerging and exotic diseases, biosecurity education, and cross-discipline research is a critical need for our department.
Position Responsibilities:
Build an externally funded, nationally recognized, self-sustainable research program that addresses issues facing the poultry industry in Texas.
Engage with poultry industry professionals, small or alternative producers, backyard flock owners, and government agencies, and cooperate in outreach activities relevant to stakeholders.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide state and regional leadership in these topic areas through interactions with industry personnel and/or small flock owners, governmental agencies, county-based extension agents, and extension specialists.
The incumbent will establish a nationally recognized, extramurally funded extension-based research program.
Graduate student mentoring to obtain these research and extension goals is essential.
Effectively communicate pertinent scientific knowledge to poultry industry stakeholders, regulatory officials, and other related clientele; publish in peer-reviewed journals; and participate in national and regional professional organizations actively.
Preferred qualifications:
Prior academic, post-doctoral, or professional experience.
Evidence of individual and/or collaborative extension and research efforts in poultry management resulting in extramural grants, peer-reviewed research and extension publications, popular press articles, and oral presentations at scientific meetings and extension events is preferred.
Prior outreach experience with stakeholder interaction.
Training in extension or teaching methods.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. or equivalent degree, including a D.V.M., from an accredited institution in Poultry Science, Animal Science, or closely related disciplines.
Willingness to work with poultry industry stakeholders in support of the land grant mission.
Ability to travel for extension programming.
Excellent written and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with diverse audiences.
The successful candidate must meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the term of employment.

The Poultry Science Department at Texas A&M University has a long and rich history, reaching back to 1910. The undergraduate teaching program of the department is the largest poultry science program in the United States and offers the most comprehensive and relevant curriculum. Departmental facilities include well equipped laboratories, classrooms and a wide variety of poultry facilities that support the broad range of research project conducted by faculty. As well, there are processing facilities, including a BSL2 processing laboratory which allows the study of pathogen and product interactions in poultry processing. The department is also home to the Center for Electron Beam Research which conducts research projects ranging from poultry health and product safety to space-bound food for NASA. Several faculty hold joint appointments In Poultry Science and the departments of Veterinary Pathobiology or Nutrition and Food Science. This cooperation greatly enhances teaching and research programs. As well, there are numerous cooperative efforts with USDA-ARS, TVMDL and several other state and federal agencies. The faculty and students of the department have national as well as internati...onal impact through a vast network of collaborators and stakeholders throughout the state, nation and world.
Our over 200 enrolled students are training to be the next generation of poultry science professionals by working with Faculty engaged in cutting-edge research and poultry extension working educate producers and the general public about the latest poultry production techniques.
