Position: Assistant Professor of Animal Science specializing in Meat Science and Muscle Biology with 80% Research (Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station) and 20% Teaching (Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences) appointment. The position is a 12-month, tenure-track appointment in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate will be expected to:
Develop a nationally competitive and extramurally-funded research program in meat science and muscle biology in beef and/or pork.
Interact with faculty, staff and students within the Department of Animal Science and across campus.
Interface with animal science industry personnel, spanning those in production agriculture through those in relevant aspects of fundamental science to develop cross-spectrum industry collaboration in conducting research, implementing findings, and contributing to departmental outreach programs.
Develop and participate in interdisciplinary and inter-institutional/agency research collaboration to address research issues.
Develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses based on the interests and needs, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.
Serve as faculty coordinator for the UA Meat Extension Program, Red Meat Abattoir (includes cooler rooms, cutting room, freezers and equipment for most routine processing of red meats) and Meat Sensory Kitchen and Display Laboratory.
MinimumQualifications:
An earned doctorate in Animal Science, Food Science, or a related field with emphasis on meat science with documented experience and training in research tools relative to meat science and meat production.Areas of expertise could include, but are not limited to, carcass composition evaluation/fabrication, meat quality and nutritional value, processed meat, and muscle growth and biology in beef and/or pork.
Demonstrated excellence in conducting and publishing high-impact research, developing an independent research program, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams of scientists. Strong speaking and writing communication skills are required.
Experience teaching in undergraduate and graduate settings. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to 2-3 courses within the department, including ‘Introduction to Animal Evaluation and Handling’, ‘Meat Science’ and a graduate course.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in research that encompasses translational and applied meat science. A demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications of original research, extramural funding in preferred research areas as well as experience in teaching or assisting in teaching at the university level are also preferred. Previous experience in extension/outreach activities are also preferred.
